He received his education at the Mozarteum Salzburg from Horiana Branisteanu and in the Lied class of Wolfgang Holzmair. As the best graduate in 2011 he was awarded the Lilli Lehmann Medal by the International Foundation Mozarteum. In the same year he also received the Gottlob Frick Medal for talented young singers.
He attended master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ruggero Raimondi, Christa Ludwig, Thomas Hampson, Helmut Deutsch, Rudolf Piernay, Francisco Araiza and Thomas Moser.
In 2010 he made his debut at Salzburg State Theatre. 2011/12 David Steffens was part of the International Opera Studio at Zurich Opera House and was then chosen as a participant in the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project in 2012.
From 2012 to 2014 he was engaged at Klagenfurt State Theatre.
In 2015 he joined the ensemble at Stuttgart State Opera as a leading soloist where he made his debut in Escamillo (Carmen), Oroveso (Norma) and the King in Prokoview’s Love to Three Oranges during this season.
He made guest appearances at Teatro Real Madrid, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Volksoper Wien, National Theatre Prague, Opéra national de Lyon, Opéra national du Rhin Strasbourg, St. Gallen Theatre, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste, Opéra de Lausanne, the Salzburg Mozartwoche and has had a close connection with the Salzburg Summer Festival during the last years.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Among the most important roles he has already interpreted are Osmin (Entführung aus dem Serail), Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau (Rosenkavalier, debut 2013 in Klagenfurt), Rocco (Fidelio), Kaspar (Freischütz), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) and King Heinrich in Wagner’s Lohengrin.
David Steffens’ concert engagements include performances at Leipzig Gewandhaus, Schubertiade Hohenems, Herkulessaal Munich, Teatro Manzoni Bologna, Malmö Symphony Hall and the Great Hall of Mozarteum Salzburg where he was invited to perform at the centennial jubilee concert. In 2017 he sang the Pater Profundus in Mahler’s 8th Symphony under the baton of Kent Nagano at the Montréal Symphony Hall.
He has already performed with renown orchestras like the Vienna Philharmonics, Montréal Symphony Orchestra, MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, camerata Salzburg, Orchestra of Bologna, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Franz Welser-Möst, René Jacobs, Zubin Mehta, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Ingo Metzmacher, Ivor Bolton, Christoph von Dohnànyi, Peter Schneider and Lothar Zagrosek.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
